When I think of the hymn "Rock of Ages", I picture in my mind an old black and white movie set in the 1800's with "Country Folk" going to a "Country Church" and singing "Rock of Ages" accompanied by a terrible sounding organ; and don't forget the warbly soprano! Do you think of something similar? Well, when my church choir director wanted to sing this rarely sung hymn straight out of the hymnal for a special meeting, I cringed a little inside. I asked if I could write an arrangement, and fortunately he said ;"YES"! I actually make this old hymn pretty. I evened out the rhythm in the first two verses, changed a couple of notes, and wrote a flowing accompaniment. Then comes a piano solo - not hard. The third verse is a more traditional SATB with the original rhythms and some interesting harmonies. The ending is reflective and reverent. I hope your choir enjoys singing a "pretty" arrangement of "Rock of Ages".
