Saxophone Quartet, Woodwind Ensemble - Level 4 - Digital Download
SKU: A0.581686
Composed by John Gibson. This edition: audio, pdf. Jazz, Latin. 2 pages. JB Linear #2031711. Published by JB Linear (A0.581686).
What is a Free Montuno anyway? First, it is free because each player has a hand in what the piece sounds like by choosing which short musical phrases to play and when to play them. A montuno is a repeated vamp pattern in Salsa music. Each player is presented with 4 phrases which can be played in any order and.....they all sound good together. The piece is written using a 2/3 clave pattern which effects both the rhythms of the montunos as well as the melodic patterns. Everyone plays from the 2 page score so you have the flexibility to change parts and to see what others are doing. Chord symbols are provided for those who wish to improvise during the piece. For 2 alto saxes, tenor sax, and bari sax. It would be a good thing to add some Latin percussion to keep the clave pattern, too. The audio sample is just one way to play A Free Montuno. Your version will be different (each time!) and that is the beauty of this Salsa "chance music". Here's one way to play this: Starting with (A), begin with the lowest part and each time add one more instrument (Bari, Tenor, Alto 2, Alto 1 - you will play (A) 4 times). After that, each player can choose from their part and play any one of section (A), (B), (C), or (D) during any one four measure phrase. Keep playing as long as you want....the variations you can generate are numerous, especially if you choose to jump to another player's part for a while, or simply do not play during a 4 bar phrase! Chord symbols are provided if someone wants to improvise. The chords remain the same for each 4 measure phrase. When you are ready to finish, someone signal and then for the next 4 measures everyone play (A) again one last time and finish up with the final ending measure given at the end. If you want, add some percussion keeping the 2/3 clave pattern going, too.
